The video link below begins with a 2009 quote from Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor: "I firmly believe in the rule of law as the foundation for all our basic rights."

Many of us hold strong beliefs about many aspects of our lives. I too agree with Justice Sotomayor's opinion that the "rule of law" is our foundation for our basic rights (Sotomayor, 2009).

However, I know that if her opinion were fact, current racial disparities that are disproportionate, persisting in our judicial system, would not exist.

As noted by the National Conference of State Legislatures (2022), "Throughout the nation, people of color are far more likely to enter the nation's justice system than the general population"(2022).

The rule of law is an aspiration that I hope is realized in the nation. It will take an honest look at race and racism in our society and how it manifests in our daily behaviors as citizens.

Race and Racism equal daily life.
