American educational institutions have experienced more than two decades of persistent challenges related to academic achievement, student behavior, and disproportionality—particularly impacting Foundational Black American students. As national priorities shifted toward high-stakes accountability, the emphasis on culturally relevant curricula and instructional practices gradually declined, diminishing efforts to effectively teach foundational skills. This shift has disproportionately affected Black students, as well as peers from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

While school systems nationwide have implemented various administrative and instructional strategies to address these inequities, the overall impact has been limited. Many of these efforts have not yielded sustained improvements in academic outcomes, behavior, or social-emotional learning (SEL) for Foundational Black American students and similarly marginalized groups within local education agencies.

The Empowering Academy Project offers a transformative alternative—an educational model grounded in the historical truths, cultural contributions, and enduring legacy of Foundational Black American communities. By centering the narratives of heroes and she-roes whose resilience has shaped ongoing movements for freedom and justice, this approach seeks to foster deeper engagement, identity development, and holistic success for students.
